A disturbing trend in the United States is picking up pace. Violations of the 13th amendment are becoming more common; human trafficking, sex slavery, and child exploitation are in the daily news. In the United States, a country that required a Civil War for abolition, slavery in common practice.
A Houston area couple residing in Katy, Texas were arrested and sentenced to the particularly light sentence of seven months in Jail for important an African migrant.
The African woman was trafficked into the United States through a false visa application through the Department of State. The couple pleaded guilty to visa fraud.
According to the indictment, the Katy couple "recruited the woman there with the promise of a $100 monthly wage. Instead, authorities say they abused her physically and verbally while she worked at their home in Katy from September 2013 to October 2015." In addition to this, "the nanny would work every day from 5:30 a.m. to 1 a.m., couldn't take breaks and had to eat leftovers and not fresh food, including being forced to only drink milk left in bowls in which the children had eaten cereal. She also couldn't take hot showers"
The amendment reads,
" Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction."
Despite this constitutional amendment, trafficking, sexual exploitation, and forced labor remain a major problem within the United States. Light jail sentences for slavery may be a cause.
In the case of this Katy, Texas couple, a light sentence is baffling. "Chudy Nsobundu, 57, and his wife Sandra Nsobundu, 49, were also sentenced by U.S. District Judge Nancy Atlas to seven months in jail and seven months of home confinement, plus three years on probation." according to the associated press."
The easy sentence highlights the necessity of getting conservatives judges in the courts as soon as possible.
