European Union Critics on the Rise in Italy
The past general elections will be a shock for politicians of the European Union: More than 70% of Italian voters chose a party opposing the EU. Next to the rather socialist 5 star movement of the comedian, Beppe Grillo, the centre right coalition under the lead of Matteo Salvini rose in popularity. Salvini is famous for his anti-EU speech in the European parliament, where he held a seat since 2004. It is highly likely that he will become prime minister, if centre right and 5 star can form allies. The former government party (centre left) under Matteo Renzi lost 227 seats within a 630 seat parliament.
Italy faces hard times: state finances are in bad shape and the need for the EU and the ECB to cheaply refinance itself. On the other hand, the EU did stop them to save their own borders. The mission: "Mare nostrum,“ with the aim to stop African migrants to come to Europe, was stopped by the European Mediterranean agency, Frontex.
Migrant crime peaked in the slaughter of a young Italian girl by Nigerian drug dealers earlier this year. So far NO country has left the Eurozone once entered. If Italy decides so, it will probably be the end of the EU as we know it. No one really knows if the European Army (EUROGENDFOR) is ready to march into a member country in order to „restore order.“ The death penalty was introduced with a legal backdoor into the European constitution, the Lisbon Treaty, which could be a tool to stop mass demonstration, if the future government of Italy won't go for an Italian version of Brexit.
If Salvini becomes president, the odds are good that Italy might split from the EU via referendum. 5 star movement seems to be a classical opposition movement that can't handle pressure and responsibility. The young leader, Luigi di Maio (born 1986), changed his mind in favor for the EU just before the election.
